On call
Dear student,
The teachers and staff of the department communication science would like to provide a diverse and inclusive learning environment for all students. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee is launching a series of questionnaires about the students’ perceptions on diversity and inclusion. This first survey is about intercultural competences. We would greatly appreciate your time in completing this survey. Please note that there are some questions included about your background, as we would like to understand how different types of students experience the diversity climate in our department. We will treat your information with care and safeguard your privacy.

The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

Please note the following:
•   The survey is for all first-year communication science students (i.e. both in the Dutch and English tracks).
•   Your participation in this study is of course voluntary and you will be awarded .5 research credit for your participation.
•   Only the primary investigators (Anna Berbers, Chei Billedo and Ernesto de León) will have access to the raw data at the individual level; communication science management will not have access to it.

If you would like to participate, please click the link below. The survey will remain active until the end of September 2025. We will likely send out one or two untargeted reminders in the upcoming weeks.

Take the survey:

Please do not hesitate to reach out to Anna Berbers (a.p.v.berbers@uva.nl) if you have any questions about the survey.

All the best and thank you in advance!

Anna Berbers

A neuroscience study for roommates only — Earn €30\€20 for a 2-hour session
Are you an empathetic person? Do you ever feel like you and your roommate are more in sync than you realize?
We at the Social Brain Lab (NIN) have decided to explore how people physically and emotionally respond to each other in shared experiences. We're especially interested in how roommates connect beyond the rent into the emotional realm.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:
• Same biological sex-identifying pairs, aged 18–35
  • Roommates for at least six months
  • No clinical conditions (e.g., epilepsy, heart problems, or strong sensitivity to stimulation)

WHAT'S INVOLVED:
A 2-hour session in our lab, together with your roommate:
In the first block of the experiment, one of you will experience a short series of mild, safe sensory stimulations that are fully calibrated to your personal threshold. You’ll have full control over the intensity, which will be adjusted to feel uncomfortable but never too painful. The other will observe and rate your reactions while we record natural physiological responses in both of you, such as:
   - Heart rate
   - Skin conductance
   - Respiration
   - Pupil size (with wireless glasses)
   - Facial muscle activity

In the second block, you will switch the role. You’ll also complete a brief interpersonal distance task to explore whether shared experiences can subtly shift how close you feel to your roommate. Finally, you’ll fill out a few short questionnaires about emotions, empathy, and your interpersonal connection.

WHAT YOU GET:
• €30\€20 per person
• A unique opportunity to contribute to neuroscience research
• Insight into how humans connect on a physiological and emotional level

HOW TO JOIN
• Make sure to register for the same time slot as your roommate — participation requires both of you!

Just like some people love to rewatch their favourite TV show or listen to their favourite song on repeat, games have the potential to draw us in again and again. The goal of this study is to form a clearer understanding of why some players prefer to replay narrative-based video games.

To participate in this study, you must be at least 16 years of age and have experience playing video games for fun. There are no other criteria for being included in this study.

This online study requires your participation at two different time points, separated by a one-week delay. During session one, you will answer questions about yourself, your experience with video games, and your general orientation to certain experiences. Then, you will play a short game that we have chosen for you. After, you will answer some questions about your experiences playing the game. About one week later, we will send you a notification (and reminders, if necessary) that you can log in again to the FMG research lab website. During session two, we will just ask you to play the game again for a short time, and answer some more questions about your experiences. Both parts of this study take place entirely online.

In total, the study requires approximately 1.5 hours to complete (Session 1: 1 hour, Session 2: 30 minutes). You can be compensated in the form of 1.5 Communication Science research credits (session 1: 1 RC, session 2: .5 RC) for your participation in this study.

For questions, please contact the researcher, Dr. Koji Yoshimura, k.b.yoshimura@uva.nl.

AI agents like ChatGPT seem to be getting smarter and smarter. Analogical reasoning is considered a skill that these AI agents haven’t quite mastered. Help us figure out how people solve letter-string analogies made to test how smart AI agents like ChatGPT are.

-----Nederlandse tekst-----

KI-systemen zoals ChatGPT lijken steeds slimmer te worden. Analogieredeneren wordt beschouwd als een vaardigheid die deze systemen nog niet helemaal onder de knie hebben. Do you want to get (back) in shape and receive a free subscription at the gym to get started? Participate in this study!

We're looking for healthy people between 16 - 30 years. You follow an 8-week exercise or yoga program and attend four paid laboratory sessions. Afterwards, you keep your gym subscription for an additional 4 months which gives you free access to individual and group (fitness or yoga) training. For the lab sessions, you receive 15 euro/1,5 credit per hour (=112,50 euro/11,25 credits for the total of 7,5 hours).

The exercise and yoga take place at the University Sports Center (USC), which has several locations in Amsterdam. The lab sessions are performed at the University of Amsterdam (Behavioural Science Lab).

Note that the sessions in the lab include viewing emotional images and hearing sounds that can be experienced as emotionally burdening. Also, electrical stimuli are used of which the strength will be determined on an individual basis. They are harmless but can be experienced as uncomfortable.

IMPORTANT. Are you interested in this study? Please first fill in the following screener to check if you are eligible. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS STUDY ON THIS PAGE BEFORE HAVING FINISHED THE SCREENING PROCEDURE. This is because we cannot process your application without the information in the screener. Thank you for your understanding.
