In this experiment, we are interested how precisely and accurately humans can perceive small variations in tactile sensations. In each trial, you will be asked to touch a pair of tactile stimuli and will be asked a series of questions about your experience. For example, we may ask you to say whether the stimuli are the same or different, or to choose which stimulus is "stickier" or "softer". We will also ask you some basic demographic questions (gender, age, etc.) and some questions about your sense of sight and/or touch. You will have several opportunities to take breaks during the experiment. The experiment lasts approximately 1 hour and yields 1 Psychology Research Credit as compensation for your participation.

We are currently looking for physically and mentally healthy participants between the age of 18 and 35.
The goal of this study is to assess how well people can use their attention to vividly imagine stories using different stimuli. You will be presented with various combinations of pictures and sounds, which you will use as the ingredients for your personally imagined events. Note that some of these stimuli are emotionally charged. The study will take place over three sessions, scheduled on three consecutive days. Each session will take between 75 and 90 minutes. During the testing sessions you will perform attention and imagination tasks on a computer.

After signing up, you will receive an email with an information letter and a screening questionnaire to check whether you are eligible to participate. Filling in the screener will only take 3 minutes. If you meet the criteria, we will call you to schedule three sessions. Please note that we can only determine after session 1 whether you can continue with sessions 2 and 3. We cannot disclose the reasons if participation ends after session 1. If this occurs, you will be informed at the end of session 1 and reimbursed for your participation in that session.

WARNING: this study makes use of aversive emotional images and sounds that can be experienced as emotionally burdening.

How does physical activity affect your performance? Contribute to science and stay in shape at the same time.

Have you ever noticed that your focus sharpens after exercising? In this study, we are exploring how your body responds to physical challenges by increasing your arousal levels through continuous exercise on a stationary bike and through challenging cognitive tasks. We want to see how these factors influence your performance and how this is reflected in physiological markers in real time.

During the session, you will perform an auditory task whist you are cycling on a hometrainer - with a very light / light intensity. We will continuously measure your pupil size, heart rate, and respiratory effort — key indicators of how your body adjusts to mental and physical demands. This experiment will help us understand more about how people perform under pressure, with potential insights into how we can optimize focus and performance.

The study lasts around 2.75 hours (session 1: 1.5 hours, session 2: 1.25 hours), and for your participation, you’ll receive 3.0 psychology research credits.

Inclusion criteria:
- You are between 18 and 30 years old
- You are English speaking (native or non-native speakers allowed)

Exclusion criteria:
- You have health conditions that would impede you from performing very light / light intensity exercise for an extended period of time (50 minutes)
- You have uncorrected visual impairments (glasses and soft lenses are allowed, but hard lenses are not)
- You have hearing deficits

Please note, you will be cycling on a hometrainer for about 50 minutes in total, so please be sure you are comfortable with this exercise duration before signing up.

If anything is unclear, feel free to ask the researcher directly, or contact them through email: s.d.vanmil@uva.nl. The researcher will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Acts of Kindness study

Participating in this scientific study will help us understand the effects of kindness on the psychological well-being of those who perform kind acts.

First, you will fill in a short screener (5 minutes) to check whether you are eligible to participate in this study. If you are eligible, you will take part in a self-guided acts of kindness intervention. For 5 weeks, you will answer daily questions (approximately 1 minute per day) via an app on your smartphone. The questions will focus on loneliness, social anxiety, social connectedness, and affect (mood).

During this period, you will be invited to the lab at the UvA twice for 30-minute meetings. You will also have a short check-in call (15 minutes) with the researcher. During the last 4 weeks of this study, you will participate in a self-guided acts of kindness intervention. In total, you will perform 12 self-chosen acts of kindness. The time you spend on each act will vary, depending on which acts of kindness you choose, but will approximately take 1 hour in total.

At the end of the 5 weeks, you will complete one final questionnaire (5 minutes), after which you will receive your research credits. So in total this study will take about 2 hours and 40 minutes in total.

Requirements:
- You are a student.
- You are at least 18 years old.

Reward:
- 4,5 research credits (Psychology RCs)

Nowadays, we turn to Large Language Models like ChatGPT to brainstorm, generate ideas, and refine our thinking, treating them as creative partners. But have you ever wondered: Does AI genuinely make our work more creative?

We’re curious about how the creative process and product differ when people collaborate with another person versus with an AI chatbot. In this study, you will write creative short stories with both your friend and an AI chatbot, and the conversation during the collaboration will be audio-recorded.

If you are interested in participating, please sign up with a friend or partner you would like to take part in the study. Both participants must register for the study and select the same time slot. The total duration of the experiment is about 60 minutes. For the reward, you will be receiving 1 Psychology RC or 10 euros.

Would you like to earn 4.5 Psychology Research Credits or €45,00? Are you interested in finding out more about your imagination? Look no further and participate in this study!

We are currently looking for physically and mentally healthy participants between the age of 18 and 35. The goal of this study is to assess how well people can imagine vivid stories using a variety of stimuli, some of which are emotionally charged. You will be presented with various combinations of pictures and sounds, which you will use as the ingredients for your personally imagined events. The study will take place over three sessions, lasting approximately 75, 45 and 60 minutes, scheduled on three consecutive days. During all sessions, we ask you to perform a computer task while several physiological measures are recorded. This means that during the task, some small sensors will be attached to your body and face. You will not be able to feel activity from these sensors, and they cannot inflict any harm. For these measures to be reliable, it is important to minimise movement.

After signing up, you will receive an e-mail containing an informed consent form and a screener to check whether you are eligible to participate. Filling in the screener will only take 3 minutes. If you meet the criteria, we will call you to schedule three sessions. Please note that we can only determine after session 1 whether you can continue with sessions 2 and 3. If your participation ends after session 1, you will be directly informed at the end of session 1 and you will be reimbursed for your participation in that session.

Curious about positive sexuality and sexual consent? Then this research is for you!

The Good Sex Project of the University of Amsterdam examines how different positive and negative personal and situational factors play a role in how people give and understand sexual consent and have positive sexual experiences. You will complete an online survey about your background and personality, as well as experiences, attitudes, and behavior regarding sexuality and sexual consent.

It will take you either about 30 or 60 minutes to complete the survey, depending on which of the two versions of the survey you choose.
Participation is completely voluntary, and you can stop at any time.
Your data will be treated with care. Psychology students at the University of Amsterdam can earn 0.5 RC or 1 RC for participation.

By better understanding how people think about and practice consent, we hope to contribute to future programs that support safe, consensual, and positive sexual experiences for all.

It is normal to sometimes think that life is not worth living. However, for some people, these thoughts can become more intense and harder to control, especially after a stressful or overwhelming event.

Have you recently experienced more frequent or more intense thoughts that life is not worth living, even though you have not acted on them?

We are conducting a research study to explore a new imagery rescripting technique designed to reduce the intensity of these thoughts.

Participation starts with a brief screening questionnaire to see if the study is suitable for you, followed by three guided sessions where you try the technique.

Your participation is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time. All responses are confidential.

You will receive 0.5 research credits for completing the screening, which lasts about 15 minutes. If you are eligible to participate in the guided imagery rescripting sessions, you can receive in total 9 research credits via Qualtrics.

Important: We do not provide treatment as part of this study. If you are currently experiencing active suicidal thoughts, have made plans to harm yourself, or have recently self-harmed, this study is not suitable for you. In that case, we strongly encourage you to contact your general practitioner or 113 Zelfmoordpreventie for support.
