Why are some people lonely while others are not? And why can loneliness sometimes be so difficult to overcome? To address these questions, this study examines factors that may contribute to the severity of loneliness. The insights gained from this research will help improve our understanding of severe loneliness and may inform the development of better questionnaires to identify individuals who could benefit from support.

If you decide to participate, you will complete an online survey with questions about your feelings, mood, and experiences of loneliness. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Everyone can participate, whether you currently experience loneliness or not. However, participants must be at least 16 years old and fluent in English, as all questionnaires are administered in English. Participation takes place online via UvA Qualtrics. Upon completion, you will receive 0.75 Research Credit.

Imagine you send a text message to a close friend and they don't reply. How would you interpret this? People can differ in whether they tend to view these situations in a positive, negative, or neutral light, and whether or not they change their mind easily. In this study, we are interested in how social interpretations and updating of social interpretations relate to everyday social behaviour such as empathy and trust. We are also interested in the role of childhood experiences and mental health.

What do I need to do?
- Complete two online computer tasks where you read descriptions of social scenarios and judge the most likely interpretation
- Fill in questionnaires on your mental health and personality, experiences, and behaviour. Note: some of these questionnaires ask about experiences or symptoms that some participants may consider traumatising or sensitive
- It will take ~30-40 minutes

Reward
- Lottery of €50

Requirements
- Sufficient command of English
- 18-25 years old

If you have already participated in our other social cognition studies you may find some of the questionnaires familiar but you are welcome to participate in all studies! For more information, please contact Anna Hudson at a.r.hudson@uva.nl.

Online onderzoek | 9.00 Psychology Research Credit
It is normal to sometimes think that life is not worth living. However, for some people, these thoughts can become more intense and harder to control, especially after a stressful or overwhelming event.

Have you recently experienced more frequent or more intense thoughts that life is not worth living, even though you have not acted on them?

We are conducting a research study to explore a new imagery rescripting technique designed to reduce the intensity of these thoughts.

Participation starts with a brief screening questionnaire to see if the study is suitable for you, followed by three guided sessions where you try the technique.

Your participation is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time. All responses are confidential.

You will receive 0.5 research credits for completing the screening, which lasts about 15 minutes. If you are eligible to participate in the guided imagery rescripting sessions, you can receive in total 9 research credits via Qualtrics.

Important: We do not provide treatment as part of this study. If you are currently experiencing active suicidal thoughts, have made plans to harm yourself, or have recently self-harmed, this study is not suitable for you. In that case, we strongly encourage you to contact your general practitioner or 113 Zelfmoordpreventie for support.

Ever found yourself raiding the fridge at midnight or losing sleep for just one more episode? Tell us about your sleep habits!

What’s the study about?
We’re exploring sleep habits across a large group of individuals. Habits like screen time, exercise, and other everyday routines — simply to understand common behaviours and broad trends. How many of us use our phones in the dead of night, get gently reminded about timely feeding schedules by beloved pets, or trade sleep for midnight snacks while binge-watching our favorite show? These behaviours are often talked about, but how frequent are they really?

What do you do?
You will fill out a short entry questionnaire (10 mins). Then, complete an online daily sleep diary for 7 days (+/- 10 mins daily).

What’s in it for you?
You can receive up to 2.25 Research Credits for your participation. The number of credits you receive, depends on how much of the study you complete: the more diary entries you complete, the more credits you receive.

Would you like to earn 4.5 Psychology Research Credits or €45,00? Are you interested in finding out more about your imagination? Look no further and participate in this study!

We are currently looking for physically and mentally healthy participants between the age of 18 and 35. The goal of this study is to assess how well people can imagine vivid stories using a variety of stimuli, some of which are emotionally charged. You will be presented with various combinations of pictures and sounds, which you will use as the ingredients for your personally imagined events. The study will take place over three sessions, lasting approximately 75, 45 and 60 minutes, scheduled on three consecutive days. During all sessions, we ask you to perform a computer task while several physiological measures are recorded. This means that during the task, some small sensors will be attached to your body and face. You will not be able to feel activity from these sensors, and they cannot inflict any harm. For these measures to be reliable, it is important to minimise movement.

After signing up, you will receive an e-mail containing an informed consent form and a screener to check whether you are eligible to participate. Filling in the screener will only take 3 minutes. If you meet the criteria, we will call you to schedule three sessions. Please note that we can only determine after session 1 whether you can continue with sessions 2 and 3. If your participation ends after session 1, you will be directly informed at the end of session 1 and you will be reimbursed for your participation in that session.

WARNING: this study makes use of aversive emotional images and sounds that can be experienced as emotionally burdening.

Curious about positive sexuality and sexual consent? Then this research is for you!

The Good Sex Project of the University of Amsterdam examines how different positive and negative personal and situational factors play a role in how people give and understand sexual consent and have positive sexual experiences. You will complete an online survey about your background and personality, as well as experiences, attitudes, and behavior regarding sexuality and sexual consent.

It will take you either about 30 or 60 minutes to complete the survey, depending on which of the two versions of the survey you choose.
Participation is completely voluntary, and you can stop at any time.
Your data will be treated with care. Psychology students at the University of Amsterdam can earn 0.5 RC or 1 RC for participation.

By better understanding how people think about and practice consent, we hope to contribute to future programs that support safe, consensual, and positive sexual experiences for all.

Title: What do theory of mind and empathy tasks *really* measure?

Are you interested in helping us to discover what social cognition tasks *really* measure? Many studies of theory of mind and empathy in people with mental health problems find differences in task performance, but few studies connect task performance with what that may mean for people's everyday lives. In this study, we are interested in seeing how ability to understand and empathise with what people are thinking and feeling in computer tasks is related to everyday social behaviour. We are also interested in the role of childhood experiences and mental health.

What do I need to do?
- Complete two online computer tasks where you will: 1) watch a ~15 minute video and answer some questions on people's thoughts and feelings; and 2) identify how people are feeling in photos and how much you empathise with them
- Fill in questionnaires on your mood, experiences, and behaviour. Note: some of these questionnaires ask about experiences that some participants may consider traumatising
- It will take ~60-75 minutes

Requirements
- Sufficient command of English
- 18-25 years old

Reward
- Lottery of €40

If you have already participated in our other social cognition study you may find some of the questionnaires familiar but you are welcome to participate in all studies! For more information, please contact Anna Hudson at a.r.hudson@uva.nl.

ENGLISH:
Do you have a memory from childhood or adolescence that still negatively affects you or emotionally disturbs you? Then we invite you to participate in our study examining techniques that target these memories.

The study consists of four lab sessions (60 minutes each) spread over one month: Three assessment sessions (baseline, 1 week post, 1 month follow-up) and one intervention session. In the assessment sessions, we ask you to complete a verbal interview about your memory and computerized questionnaires. During the intervention, you will either receive an Imagery Rescripting session or a memory recall session guided by a trained student in clinical psychology. During this session, we ask you to relive the memory in detail using your imagination.

We are looking for Dutch or English-speaking participants who:
-   are at least 18 years old
-   have a negative and highly distressing memory from an interpersonal event during childhood or adolescence (≤ 16 years old)
-   have not received psychotherapy in the last three months or are currently on a waiting list for treatment

Are you interested in participating? Please fill out the screener (±5 minutes) and we will reach out to schedule the four sessions if you are eligible. If you complete the study, you will receive 4 Psychology Research Credits or €40 for your participation (upon completing the entire study).

Acts of Kindness study

Participating in this scientific study will help us understand the effects of kindness on the psychological well-being of those who perform kind acts.

First, you will fill in a short screener (5 minutes) to check whether you are eligible to participate in this study. If you are eligible, you will take part in a self-guided acts of kindness intervention. For 5 weeks, you will answer daily questions (approximately 1 minute per day) via an app on your smartphone. The questions will focus on loneliness, social anxiety, social connectedness, and affect (mood).

During this period, you will be invited to the lab at the UvA twice for 30-minute meetings. You will also have a short check-in call (15 minutes) with the researcher. During the last 4 weeks of this study, you will participate in a self-guided acts of kindness intervention. In total, you will perform 12 self-chosen acts of kindness. The time you spend on each act will vary, depending on which acts of kindness you choose, but will approximately take 1 hour in total.

At the end of the 5 weeks, you will complete one final questionnaire (5 minutes), after which you will receive your research credits. So in total this study will take about 2 hours and 40 minutes in total.

Requirements:
- You are a student.
- You are at least 18 years old.

Reward:
- 4,5 research credits (Psychology RCs)

Online onderzoek | 6.75 Psychology Research Credit / 67.50 Euro
ENGLISH:
Would you like to earn 6.75 Psychology Research Credits or 67.50 euros? Are you interested in finding out more about your imagination? Look no further and participate in this study! We are currently looking for physically and mentally healthy participants between the age of 18 and 35. The goal of this study is to assess how well people can script vivid stories using a variety of stimuli. You will be presented with various combinations of pictures and sounds, which you will use as the ingredients for your personally imagined events.

The study will take place over three sessions, scheduled on three consecutive days. However, please note that we can only determine after session 1 whether you can continue your participation in sessions 2 and 3. We cannot disclose the reasons for ending your participation after session 1. If you cannot continue after session 1, we will inform you at the end of the session and reimburse you for your participation in the first session. All sessions take 1,5 hours each (4.5 hours in total). During all sessions, you will have to perform an imagination task on the computer. After signing up, you will receive an e-mail containing an informed consent form and a screener to check whether you are eligible to participate. Filling in the screener will only take 3 minutes. If you meet the criteria, we will call you to ask some additional questions and, if you turn out to be eligible, schedule the three lab sessions.

WARNING: this study makes use of aversive emotional images and sounds that can be experienced as emotionally burdening.

DUTCH:

Elke sessie duurt 1,5 uur (4,5 uur in totaal).

How does physical activity affect your performance? Contribute to science and stay in shape at the same time.

Have you ever noticed that your focus sharpens after exercising? In this study, we are exploring how your body responds to physical challenges by increasing your arousal levels through continuous exercise on a stationary bike and through challenging cognitive tasks. We want to see how these factors influence your performance and how this is reflected in physiological markers in real time.

During the session, you will perform an auditory task whist you are cycling on a hometrainer - with a very light / light intensity. We will continuously measure your pupil size, heart rate, and respiratory effort — key indicators of how your body adjusts to mental and physical demands. This experiment will help us understand more about how people perform under pressure, with potential insights into how we can optimize focus and performance.

The study lasts around 2.75 hours (session 1: 1.5 hours, session 2: 1.25 hours), and for your participation, you’ll receive 3.0 psychology research credits.

Inclusion criteria:
- You are between 18 and 30 years old
- You are English speaking (native or non-native speakers allowed)

Exclusion criteria:
- You have health conditions that would impede you from performing very light / light intensity exercise for an extended period of time (50 minutes)
- You have uncorrected visual impairments (glasses and soft lenses are allowed, but hard lenses are not)
- You have hearing deficits

Please note, you will be cycling on a hometrainer for about 50 minutes in total, so please be sure you are comfortable with this exercise duration before signing up.

If anything is unclear, feel free to ask the researcher directly, or contact them through email: s.d.vanmil@uva.nl. The researcher will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
